If you are… Then you need… Frequency of Training
Personnel who package or complete paperwork for shipments containing biological materials, genetically modified microorganisms, dangerous goods and/or dry ice via Federal Express or another delivery service (e.g., US Postal Service) Shipping of Dangerous Goods/IATA. Classroom sessions are offered for both initial and refresher training. Every other year. Staff must attend a classroom session prior to preparing packages or paperwork for shipments containing biological materials, dry ice or other dangerous goods. Science Department employees, students and others who work in a John Jay College laboratory. Laboratory Safety Training. Faculty can complete the training by reviewing the module posted on the Resource Page of Inside John Jay and completing the quiz at the end of the module. Laboratory staff can attend classroom training sessions. PRISM will arrange for training for students who will conduct research (paid or unpaid) in research labs. Annually. Science Department employees, students and others who work in a John Jay College research laboratory and have potential exposure to blood, human cell lines, pathogens or other potentially infectious materials. Bloodborne Pathogens/Biosafety Training for Laboratory Personnel. Annual training is required and will be arranged through Natalya Timmer. Annually. Email Natalya Timmer ntimmer@jjay.cuny.edu.
Science Department employees, students or others who wish to package or complete paperwork for shipments containing infectious substances, recombinant dna, chemicals, genetically modified microorganisms and/or dry ice via Federal Express or another delivery service (e.g., US Postal Service). Science Department employees who have responsibilities in a laboratory. Students working in a laboratory outside of coursework (paid or unpaid) Hazardous Waste Training is required for Science Department faculty and staff who have responsibilities in a laboratory. Hazardous Waste Awareness Training will be incorporated into PRISM student Laboratory Safety training sessions. Annually. An online module and quiz is available through the Resource page of Inside John Jay or this topic will be covered upon request in a classroom session. Personnel who plan to work with recombinant DNA, lasers, highly hazardous chemicals or other hazards not covered in Laboratory Safety Training. Hazard Specific Training Initial training and as needed. Contact safety@jjay.cuny.edu
Employees in Shipping and Receiving, Print Shop, Public Safety, Theater, Children’s Center, and Facilities Training topics are based upon the kind of activities being performed and include, but are not limited to: Hazard Communication (chemical safety), Personal Protective Equipment, Bloodborne Pathogens, Hazardous Waste Management, Lockout-Tagout, Confined Spaces, Fall Protection, Ladder Safety, Hot work, Arc Flash, Electrical Safety, Machine Guarding, Universal Waste Initial training and as required.
