Peer Tutors
A peer tutor is a tutor who is also an undergraduate/graduate student. Most of our peer tutors are John Jay students, but we also hire qualified peer tutors from other local colleges. Applicants for the position of peer tutor must submit a completed application form, at least one faculty recommendation, a resume, and copies of all undergraduate transcripts (unofficial transcripts are fine).
The MSRC accepts applications year-round, but we typically interview only twice per year, in December and July. For application instructions, please see below. Qualified applicants will be contacted via email to schedule a diagnostic exam and interview.
Qualifications
- Be a currently enrolled John Jay undergraduate or graduate student with sophomore standing or higher
- Have received a grade of at least A- in the course(s) you wish to tutor.
- Have an overall GPA of at least 3.0.
- Be dependable, punctual, and self-motivated. Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Be able to work at least 4 hours per week consistently throughout the semester. Be available to attend paid training and staff meetings.

Transcripts do not have to be official. Unofficial copies are fine. For John Jay or other CUNY schools, you can print your unofficial transcript directly from CUNYFirst.
Resumes and transcripts may be delivered in person or scanned and emailed as PDF attachments. Please clearly identify yourself and the document in the file names. For example: jsmith-resume.pdf, jsmith-transcript.pdf.

Federal Work-Study Positions
Are you eligible to receive Work-Study through your Financial Aid? Then you can apply to be a Receptionist at the Math & Science Resource Center!
