First & Second Semester Freshmen Advisement
Preparing for Advisement
As a freshman, advisement is mandatory! Your assigned Academic Advisor will reach out to you to schedule a small group advisement session where you will discuss your current courses, career goals, experiential learning opportunities, and future course selection.
- All communication from your assigned Academic Advisor will be sent to your John Jay email.
- Access your DegreeWorks prior to your appointment and check your next semester course recommendations in your Student Education Plan (SEP).
- Complete the UninterruptED Values & Career Exploration module to learn more about your passions, values, and skills to make connections to potential career goals.
- Complete the FOCUS-2 work interest assessment to help you explore majors and careers/occupations that match your personal attributes and preferences.
- Explore major options and requirements on the Major Advisement & Resources page. Feeling overwhelmed by your options? Start by visiting our How to Choose a Major page which breaks down all of John Jay's majors into five categories.
- Interested in exploring beyond your major? Take a look at the various Minors and Certificate Programs that are available at John Jay.
Making the Most of Your Time at John Jay
What you do outside of the classroom is just as important as what you do inside of it. Learn more about the various fun and interesting ways that you can gain valuable real-world experience, explore a hobby or interest, and make important connections!
- Learn more about John Jay's Center for Career and Professional Development and the ways you can gain experience geared towards your career interest. Watch this video tutorial on how to access John Jay Careers Online to schedule an appointment with a Career Counselor and sign up for events and workshops such as resume and cover letter building, mock interviewing, and the Career & Internship Fair.
- It's never too early to start thinking about the ways you can gain real world experience and develop your skill set! Experiential Learning Opportunities, such as internships and on-campus leadership roles, can do just that.
- Connect with students who share similar interests and passions by joining a Student Organization.
First Year Support
You're never alone at John Jay! Interested in tutoring for your math course? Have questions about writing a paper in MLA format? Need to speak with someone about your financial aid? There is an office that can help with all these things and more!

Course Registration Resources
Course enrollment for winter and spring begins in November and summer and fall in April. In order to have the widest selection of courses to choose from, it is best to start preparing early!
- View the College Bulletin to review general education requirements, major and minor requirements, read course descriptions, and become familiar with academic policies.
