Research in Action
An OSRC Event Series Highlighting the Ubiquitous Power of Research
The Office for Student Research & Creativity (OSRC) is launching a new semi-annual event series in the fall of 2024 with the explicit purpose of demonstrating the need for and value of applied research that links the academic and professional worlds. To that end, the OSRC will invite representatives from public office and agencies, academic experts, members of corporate organizations, and leaders in advocacy and non-profits to discuss timely issues through the lens of research. Throughout this series we will explore how research is used to address major relevant issues and how research informs reliant sectors, including government, private and public industries, and service providers, as well as, perhaps most notably, its impacts on societies’ perceptions of research-based solutions.
Allowing industry leaders to have an informal conversation about the impact research has on their specific fields, each event will be moderated by a John Jay College student who has a demonstrated interest or experience in the respective field and facilitated by a current OSRC student staffer. Event formats are designed around the particular topic at hand, the number and background of participants, and an assessment of student demand. Events will also be interactive, including real time polling, multimedia information sharing, and networking opportunities.
Specifically, RIAs (3) major objectives in serving our student community are:
- To introduce the concept of APPLIED RESEARCH, using examples of academic and/or institutional research in professional settings.
- To create opportunities for students to learn about the impact of their own research in advocacy, practice, and politics through active participation.
- To offer networking, internship, and job opportunities in research related sectors of private and public institutions.
