Re: Funding for a New Cyber Lab Thanks to U.S. Senator Charles Schumer
I am thrilled to share exciting news about new federal funding thanks to the strong advocacy of Majority Leader, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer. As a community, we are deeply grateful to Leader Schumer, New York’s senior U.S. Senator, who personally secured $963,000 in the recently approved FY2024 spending bill in his chamber for John Jay. These funds will support the development of a state-of-the-art Forensics and Cybercrime Investigations Laboratory and Research Suite, which will be under the direction of our Center for Cybercrime Studies. The Laboratory will enhance John Jay’s research, instruction, professional training, and technical capacity to address threats and vulnerabilities within emerging technologies.
By establishing a laboratory and research suite—with the help of the significant, congressionally directed spending award—our widely-acclaimed Center for Cybercrime Studies can better assist public and private organizations understand the ever-changing cybercrime risk landscape, detect cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and identify the methods used by cybercriminals to evade security measures. The faculty associated with the Center has consulted and collaborated with leading stakeholders in the field, including: the Global Cyber Security Alliance, National Cyber Forensics and Training Alliance, New York City Cyber Command, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the New York City Police Department.
The new research facility will strengthen John Jay’s efforts to diversify the national cyber workforce as we prepare students for the cyber threats of the future. It will also empower us to conduct multidisciplinary research projects and training for public and private sector practitioners.
We are very appreciative of Leader Schumer’s ongoing support of our academic and research pursuits. His invaluable partnership helps power the aspirations and achievements of our students, faculty, and staff. Additionally, I thank the Chancellor and his staff for their support in advocating for this project.
