Celebrating the third cohort of the Ron Moelis Social Entrepreneurship Fellowship, John Jay hosted a Moelis Social Entrepreneurship Fellows Breakfast on September 17, in honor of the 10 students who will take part in the program. Established in 2017, by Ron Moelis, CEO and Co-founder of L+M Development Partners and led by Professor Heath Brown, Moelis Fellowship Director and Associate Professor of Public Policy, this Fellowship aims to support John Jay students as they study societal issues and strive to create social impact. “We’ve been inspired by Ron Moelis’ work in real estate development which he has shaped to be more like community building and development that is sensitive to a holistic sense of neighborhood and social development,” said Charlotte Walker-Said, Faculty Director of the Moelis Social Entrepreneurship Program. “We are grateful to Ron, are thankful for his donation, and we are driven to develop new curricular offerings that reflect the energy and growth in this new field of social entrepreneurship that is transforming how we think about social justice.”

With the generous donation from Moelis, students will take part in interdisciplinary classes on social impact and connect with the most socially responsible and innovative companies, experts, and industry leaders within New York City. “These students have a broad range of skills, expertise, interests, and come from a diverse range of majors. Despite their differences, they all have one thing in common: they are socially conscious and can articulate well-thought-out social criticism,” said Moelis, adding why he decided to create this program. “Their enthusiasm inspired me and I hope that this fellowship will bolster the students’ passion and nurture their entrepreneurial spirit so they can make positive changes in the broader community.”

Speaking to Moelis about his appreciation for the program, Atsouco Saint Louis, a 2019 Moelis Social Entrepreneurship Fellow, noted why student involvement in this fellowship was important for the John Jay community. “Cultivating entrepreneurship into John Jay College is beneficial to everyone,” said Saint Louis. “It welcomes new ways of thinking, allows for hands-on opportunities, and teaches the next wave of John Jay students how to better solve social issues.”
