How has John Jay enhanced or supported your LGBTQ+ identity?
Joining Spectra was the biggest life changer for me. Not only did I make many friends and a forever family, but I have become a better person for it. Without Spectra, I would have continued to be a person who went to school and ran off campus after my classes ended. Spectra made me want to be on campus and around others. The way the club helped with fundraising, resources, and outreach is amazing.

“One of my biggest challenges is facing my family. They’re often uncomfortable about my identity or outright against me being a lesbian. The experience has been more bearable with the help of Spectra.” —Maribel Guzman ’24

What are some of your biggest challenges as a member of the LGBTQ+ community?
One of my biggest challenges is facing my family. They’re often uncomfortable about my identity or outright against me being a lesbian. Sometimes it feels like I have to come out every day—especially to my mother. The experience has been more bearable with the help of Spectra and my friends. If anyone is going through a similar situation, I want them to know that they’re not alone.

Which LGBTQ+ community leaders inspire you?
One of the most influential people on campus is our new Student Council President, Sam Ascencio. Before I met him and joined Spectra, I only had a small idea of the LGBTQIA+ community. I knew that I belonged to the community and I had the basic information down, but I never knew the full scope of the struggles our community faced. I wasn’t aware of the resources available to us. He taught me—and continues to teach me—about the history, unity, and opportunities for the community. To be the first openly trans Student Council President is a feat in and of itself, but if you add on all of Sam’s other accomplishments, it’s clear that he is a remarkable leader, mentor, and best friend.
