How do you empower a community? You give its members the tools and resources they need to thrive. That was the goal of Community Resource Fair 2019 held at John Jay College on February 13. The event was co-hosted by New York City Council Speaker and Acting Public Advocate Corey Johnson and City Council Member Helen Rosenthal. “It is critical that New York City residents are informed about the services and opportunities offered by City agencies and not-for-profit organizations,” said Johnson.

Attendees included a mix of John Jay College students and local community members who were able to benefit from some of the free medical services being offered at the Fair, such as free blood pressure tests by Lenox Hill HealthPlex, free flu shots from Duane Reade/Walgreens, and free vision exams from SUNY College of Optometry. Attendees were also able to gather information about employment opportunities from city agencies, apply for affordable housing, and get tips on emergency preparedness.

We spoke with some John Jay students attending the Community Resource Fair and asked them what they were hoping to learn and gain from the event.

“I want to go into mental health counseling so I thought this fair would be a wonderful opportunity to get some insight from some of the New York City agencies that offer counseling services. It’s a great way to help find new ways to advance my career.”

“I was excited to come to the Community Resource Fair to see what services are available to the community and the student body. As a student, sometimes you’re so busy with school work, you miss out on events such as these that are so important for your future and wellbeing.”

“I came to pick up some brochures from some of the law enforcement agencies that are here. I’m hoping to work with the NYPD and the FBI in the future. This is a good starting point.”

“I’m looking for new job opportunities. One of the agencies here that interested me was the Department of Sanitation. They offer great benefits. I’m hoping they have some part-time opportunities available for me.”
