MPA Student Receives Three Scholarships to Participate in National Conference

Valerie Gudino ’24, a student in the Master’s of Public Administration program, received three scholarships to support participation in the 2024 American Society of Public Administration National (ASPA) Conference: the ASPA Wallace O. Keene Conference Scholarship, the ASPA Section for Women in Public Administration (SWPA) Student Scholarship, and the ASPA Section on Professional and Organizational Development (SPOD) scholarship to present at the 13th Annual Global Public Administration and Policy Capstone Panel.

The Keene Scholarship, which emphasizes the impact of ethical leadership on the public's trust in government, provides free registration to the conference. The SWPA scholarship helps defray the costs associated with attending the conference. The SPOD scholarship supports Gudino’s presentation of “State Prison Oversight: The Case for Increased Transparency and Accountability in State Prisons.”

Gudino was nominated for the scholarships by Dr. Shilpa Viswanath, assistant professor of public management, with whom she is co-authoring a chapter in Neurodiversity in the Public Sector Workplace. While at John Jay, Gudino earned a Tow Policy Fellowship, through which she was placed with the Correctional Association of New York.

Gudino is currently an assistant policy and budget analyst with the NYC Independent Budget Office (IBO). In this role, she provides non-partisan information, reporting and research for the IBO’s public safety portfolio.
