To raise awareness on the issue of domestic violence, John Jay College will take part in the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence’s “Shine the Light on Domestic Violence” campaign by encouraging all members of the college community to wear purple attire on Thursday, October 20. Cruz Bueno, Assistant Professor in the Black Studies Department at SUNY New Paltz, will discuss her research on the web of social forces that produce economic inequality, often at the disproportionate expense of people of color. She has presented at national professional conferences on subjects including gender violence and poverty in the Dominican Republic and other Latin American and Caribbean nations, and is a recipient of the 2014 Rhonda Williams Prize from the International Association for Feminist Economics.

This briefing will be hosted by John Jay’s Center on Media, Crime and Justice in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence.

Students and staff of the Women’s Center for Gender Justice visit Sakhi for South Asian Women, an organization uniting survivors, communities and institutions to eradicate domestic violence. Founded in 1989 by a group of South Asian women, Sakhi serves survivors and mobilize community members to condemn abuse.

The Clothesline Project is a visual arts campaign to commemorate victims of intimate partner violence and honor survivors of assault in our community. T-shirts will be decorated by students, staff, and faculty throughout October at tables in the Kroll Atrium and in the Women’s Center for Gender Justice, room L.67.10. A clothesline featuring the t-shirts will be hung outside the Student Dinning Hall on the second floor of the New Building from November 2-16.
The National Network for Safe Communities announced in April the launch of the National Intimate Partner Violence Intervention Initiative(NIPVII) with a $1.6 million grant from the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW). NIPVII is work with selected cities to replicate a strategy that has shown dramatic impact on intimate partner violence in its initial implementation in High Point, North Carolina.
