#1 for Law Enforcement Enrollment, #37 for Bachelor’s Degrees
(New York, NY)-- John Jay College of Criminal Justice was ranked #1 in the nation by Hispanic Outlook on Education magazine for enrolling the most Latinx students for Homeland Security, Law Enforcement, Firefighting, and Related Protective Services Degrees. The magazine also ranked John Jay College #37 in its annual Top 100 Colleges and Universities for Hispanics list for total bachelor’s degrees granted to Latinx students in 2019-2020 – the highest ranking among CUNY colleges. John Jay ranked #65 in total enrollment of Latinx students. The magazine’s rankings are based on data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).
“After a pandemic year marked by unprecedented challenges—particularly for Latinx students—John Jay is especially honored to be ranked in the top 100 colleges and universities for Hispanics,” says John Jay College President Karol V. Mason. “At John Jay we are laser focused on supporting the success of our students from traditionally underrepresented groups, including our Latinx, Dreamer, and immigrant students, and we are immensely proud to be among the top degree-granting institutions in the nation for Latinx students.”
With Latinx students making up nearly 50 percent of its student body, John Jay is a federally-designated Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and has been working to intentionally design student programs, faculty seminars and revised curriculum to truly ensure Latinx student success. The ¡Adelante! Latinx leadership program, one of several student programs, supports students interested in Latinx issues with scholarships, jobs, internships, leadership training workshops, mentoring and goal-oriented planning.
In the classroom, HSI faculty development seminars identify and address gaps related to effective teaching and learning experiences for Latinx students. The Criminal Justice B.S. major, which counts 4000 students, updated several courses and course descriptions, doubled its diversity requirements, and added new course options from the Latin American and Latinx Studies Departments based on race, crime and justice.
