John Jay College is third nationwide for sending Black applicants to law school, according to the Law School Admission Council, serving as a pipeline to the legal profession for members of an historically underrepresented group and helping to diversify the law.
John Jay’s Pre-Law Institute prepares its students for law school by helping them explore different legal career paths, think about lawyers as advocates for justice, apply for law school scholarships, prepare for the LSAT, submit law school applications and network with law schools, lawyers and law students. Some of the Institute’s initiatives include judicial internships, Law Day, Pre-Law Boot Camp, Summer LSAT Prep and the Graduate and Professional School Fair.
More than 20% of John Jay students identify as Black, 50% are the first in their families to go to college and 75% attended New York City public schools. As a Minority-Serving Institution, many John Jay programs are designed to ensure students succeed in college and become leaders in their communities, including the Urban Male Initiative, MBK Connect and McNair Achievement Program.
This year, John Jay students were accepted at law schools across the country, including the University of California Berkeley School of Law, CUNY School of Law, University of Connecticut School of Law, Emory University School of Law, Fordham University School of Law, Georgetown University Law Center, Howard University School of Law, University of Michigan Law School, Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, Penn State Law, Rutgers Law School, St. John’s University School of Law, Syracuse University College of Law and University of Texas School of Law.
John Jay was also recently ranked #4 for social mobility and #5 for public colleges by U.S. News & World Report, #1 in the country for criminal justice, forensic science and legal studies by University HQ, #4 nationwide in best public colleges by Money magazine, #7 in “best bang for the buck” by Washington Monthly and a top veteran-friendly school by US Veterans Magazine.
