Bio

Allison Kavey is a full professor in the History Department at John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY). She received her PhD in 2004 from the Department of the History of Science, Medicine, and Technology at The Johns Hopkins University.  She is a member of the CUNY Graduate Center faculty in the History Department.

She is the author of Books of Secrets: Popular Natural Philosophy in England, 1550-1600 (Illinois, 2007).  She is co-author with Lester D. Friedman of Monstrous Progeny: a History of the Frankenstein Narratives ( Rutgers, 2018) and co-editor with Friedman of an guest volume of Literature and Medicine dedicated to Frankenstein (2018).  She is co-author with Rae-Ellen Kavey, MD. of Viral Pandemics: Smallpox to Covid-19 (Routledge, 2020).  She is also the co-editor with Lester Friedman of Second Star to the Right: Peter Pan in the Popular Imagination (Rutgers, 2010).  She has also written many articles on fields ranging from medical humanities to Agrippa.

Research Summary

She is currently working on a book about the magical universe proposed by Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim's in his Three Books of Occult Philosophy. Future projects include a history of eugenics with David Munns and another project with Lester Friedman.
