Credit for Military Service

The college follows the recommendations of the American Council on Education (ACE) in granting credit for military training, based on review of students' military transcripts. For assistance, please see the Office of Military & Veteran Services.

Credit for Uniformed Members of Service (including NYPD, FDNY, DOC)

Students who have successfully completed a training program that has been evaluated by the College for the award of credit or a program that has been recommended for the award of credit by the American Council on Education (ACE) or the National College Credit Recommendation Service (NCCRS), must apply to the Office of Testing and Evaluation for the application of this credit toward their undergraduate degree. Applicants must provide documentation in support of their requests. A statement or transcript indicating subjects taken, grades received, dates of attendance, and the number of hours of participation must be sent directly to the Office of Testing and Evaluation from the agency that has provided the training.

Note: Credit awards depend upon the date trainings were completed.

Credit for Evaluated Training Programs

Students may receive credit for training programs that have been evaluated by the American Council on Education (ACE) or the National College Credit Recommendation Service (NCCRS). Contact the Prior Learning Coordinator in the Office of Academic Programs (undergrad@jjay.cuny.edu).

American Red Cross Training Program

The "Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED" course in "Online + Classroom" format is the only course approved for credit via the American Red Cross. This involves completing a portion of the course online prior to an in-person session led by an American Red Cross instructor.

Please use the search function on the American Red Cross website to search for a course near you.

Students can earn 1 PED elective credit by completing the approved training course. Please ensure that you sign up for the exact course specified. Once completed, send a copy of your certificate of completion to undergrad@jjay.cuny.edu or to marismendi@jjay.cuny.edu in order to have the credit applied to your academic record.

American Heart Association Training Program

The "Heartsaver CPR/AED" course in "Blended Learning" format is the only course approved for credit via the American Heart Association. This involves completing a portion of the course online prior to an in-person, "hands-on" session led by an American Heart Association instructor.

Students can earn 1 PED elective credit by completing the approved training course. Please ensure that you sign up for the exact course specified. New York State Seal of Biliteracy

Students who earned the New York State Seal of Biliteracy (NYSSB) in high school will be awarded 6 credits corresponding to introductory 101 and 102 foreign language courses. This course credit will also satisfy the appropriate Gen Ed areas: Flexible Core: World Cultures and Global Issues (101) and College Option: Communications (102).

Students wanting to earn credit in this way should email a copy of their NYSSB certificate to the Office of Academic Programs at undergrad@jjay.cuny.edu.

NOTE: Students who earn the Seal of Biliteracy from states outside of New York will also receive 6 credits, equivalent to Introductory 101 and 102 foreign language courses.

Individualized Prior Learning Assessment

Students may seek credit by preparing a portfolio to document their prior college-level learning from experience. Students who wish to pursue the portfolio option may do so by enrolling in the Prior Learning Seminar or by permission of the Prior Learning Coordinator in the Office of Academic Programs (undergrad@jjay.cuny.edu).
