Inaugural MBK Summer Program Highlights

  • Each student enrolled in a course and received a comprehensive suite of  academic supports and services
  • Students experienced enriching on and off-campus programming and community-building activities
  • 99% of participants completed the program
  • All students passed their summer course and the group GPA was 3.2

MBK Scholars Early Academic Success

  • 98% of the students enrolled in the summer program completed the 2023 fall semester
  • MBK Scholars were more likely to attempt and pass 15 or more credits than the overall student body
  • 95% of the students were retained into the spring 2024 term - higher than any other John Jay cohort program 
  • Students were more likely to be retained and less likely to receive a failing grade than Men of Color at the College overall

First-Year Accomplishments & Engagement

  • Thirteen students won an Urban Male Institute Leadership Academic Excellence Award for maintaining at least a 3.5 GPA
  • Three students received a 2024-2025 Ron Moelis Social Entrepreneurship Fellowship
  • Members of the MBK Brotherhood were elected:
    • President of the Black Student Union
    • Treasurer of the Black Student Union
    • Vice-President of the Environmental Club
    • Freshman Representative for the Student Council (re-elected as Sophomore Representative)
  • One student is working on a research project and seven are participating in Federal Work Study
