All Stars Project of New York Program
About Us: The All Stars Project of New York (ASP of NY), is part of the national nonprofit, All Stars Project Inc., which was founded in 1981, and reaches more than 5,000 young people throughout New York City annually. The ASP of NY sponsors innovative afterschool programs for young people – and people of all ages – from the poorest neighborhoods in every borough of NYC. Our focus is on development, and we make use of play and performing to help young people see and create new possibilities in their lives. Our approach is based on the understanding that development is a foundation for learning and that afterschool and outside-of-school engagement is the best environment for fostering development for children and youth.
Intern Roles:
- Contribute to the growth and development of youth in NYC and is eager to cultivate and enhance their people and production skills, as well as learn about the relationship between performance and growth in everyday life.
- Work with students, ages 16-21 in the Development School for Youth leadership program, to successfully prepare for and navigate the professional world in corporations throughout NYC. They will also have the opportunity to develop and enhance their ability to organize and prioritize tasks, execute verbal and written communications with students and ASP of NY team members, manage and track information, and prepare and deliver reports.
- There is also the opportunity to take on expanded responsibilities based on the person’s current skill and interests.
ATD Fourth World
Brooklyn, Manhattan
About Us: ATD Fourth World works to overcome poverty by building community with people living in the worst conditions of poverty and exclusion. We bring recognition to the life skills and knowledge of those who resist extreme poverty in their daily lives. We aim to increase public awareness and civic engagement in ways that counteract prejudice against people in poverty, and that defend their human rights. In NYC, we lead grassroots activities to empower children and adults facing discrimination from poverty. We run a literacy project called Story Garden and host the Festival of Arts and Learning (FoAL) in Brownsville, Brooklyn in the summer. We also lead advocacy work at the United Nations to bring the voices, experiences and concerns of those living in extreme poverty.
Intern Roles: Communications Intern
- Research and understand current digital storytelling trends and best practices, identify opportunities and guide storytelling campaigns.
- Monitor and manage ATD Fourth World social media accounts.
- Brainstorm content and campaign ideas.
- Create content for social media, newsletters, and website.
- Analyze analytics and track engagement to identify high performing ideas.
- Grow and expand ATD Fourth World Twitter and Instagram.
- Assist with the design and execution of digital and printed communications materials.
BronxWorks, Inc.
Bronx, Bronx-based non-profit
About Us: BronxWorks helps individuals and families improve their economic and social well-being. From toddlers to seniors, we feed, shelter, teach, and support our neighbors to build a stronger community.
Intern Roles:
- Activity Specialist: Co-facilitate project-based learning groups of up to 20 youth ages 14-15.
- Site Monitors: Act as a liaison between worksites and the program provider. Responsibilities include collecting timesheets, conducting assessments, and communicating with worksite supervisors and participants.
- Program Assistants: Administrative role that entails ensuring attendance is entered, assist with enrollment, communicate with participants and worksites, and assist Program Coordinators in preparation and implementation of the program.
Court Navigator
About Us: The New York State Unified Court System welcomes undergraduate students to apply for an internship with the Office for Justice Initiatives. Students are provided the opportunity to integrate classroom education and theory with practical and relevant “real-life” experience. We are committed to providing an interactive experience where participants will be involved in various components of the agency and will be expected to develop a concrete understanding of the State Judiciary.
Intern Roles:
- Under the supervision of the Outreach Coordinator, students will get the opportunity visit different courthouses, observe court proceedings, shadow attorneys, judges and other court personnel and participate in the administrative aspects of the Office’s initiatives and programs.
- This includes drafting memos and correspondence, reviewing the court’s webpages for clarity and conciseness, and participating in diverse research and organizational projects to advance our access to justice goals.
Families on the Move of New York City, Inc.
Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx
About Us: A non-profit family run organization dedicated to providing support, education, and advocacy for families and caregivers of children and youth who are experiencing or at risk of experiencing emotional, behavioral, mental health, and/or substance abuse challenges while improving health and wellness.
Intern Roles:
- Advocate, communicate, and address the needs of children and youth that have emotional, behavioral, mental health and or substance abuse challenges who are receiving services.
- Collaborates with others to develop and publicize youth support groups, recreational activities, educational workshops/training.
- Ability to work in a psychiatric facility.
- Will be trained as a mandated reporter and gain Peer Youth Advocate Credentials.
Girl Vow
Bronx
About Us: We are a Bronx based nonprofit focused on girls/lgbtq youth who have been impacted by foster care, juvenile justice, and poverty. We provide intensive mentoring services, 1:1, groups, crisis intervention, and gender-specific mentorship using social media and internet radio.
Intern Roles:
- Conduct/assist with life skill workshops, as a social media strategist, community advocate, public speaker, mentor, and advocate.
- The position will require travel and some data management.
Good Call NYC
About Us: Good Call’s mission is to empower communities of color and create systemic transformation by using technology & community organizing to provide immediate access to legal support. We support marginalized populations across the 5 boroughs of New York City, through our early legal intervention advocacy network and youth programming. Our goal is to give the community equal access & understanding of their 6th Amendment rights.
Intern Roles:
- Digital Community Outreach; Reaching out to Good Call participants in the 5 boroughs and assist in telling these individuals stories. Curating these unique yet unto common stories and posting on Good Call’s various Social Media Platforms.
- Developing a Social Media justice-based project with the help of the Good Call team.
- Presenting said project at the end of the internship experience.
- Creating a campaign for the youth that will teach and develop awareness among the NYC community.
Hunger Free America
Bronx, Queens
About Us: National non-profit group building a non-partisan, grass roots membership movement to enact the policies and programs needed to end domestic hunger and ensure that all Americans have sufficient access to nutritious food.
Intern Roles:
- Available in research & policy and community outreach.
- Students may be working on projects related to food insecurity on college campuses and technology strategies in benefits administration.
- Proficiency in a second language (Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Haitian Creole) is desired in interns working in community outreach.
L.O.V.E (Latinas On the Verge of Excellence)
About Us: The Latinas On the Verge of Excellence, L.O.V.E., Mentoring Program supports and empowers young Latinas to strive both in school and in life through positive role modeling. The L.O.V.E. Mentoring Program aims to increase high school graduation rates, college enrollment, and healthy lifestyles among young Latinas with the support of positive role models who believe in their inner power and are committed to help them achieve their full potential.
Intern Roles:
- Programming: Help plan, implement and facilitate L.O.V.E. mentoring sessions. Provide direct support to students at partner schools by referring them to services (i.e. tutoring, SAT prep, homework help etc…). Assist with data entry and conduct L.O.V.E. Mentoring Program evaluations. Provide direct support with organization's projects and tasks. Communicate effectively with L.O.V.E. Mentoring Program Coordinator.
- Fundraising: Searching and developing relationships with new potential sources of revenue (private foundations; corporations; government). Providing support in the creation of grant proposals. Researching and establishing new community-based partnerships. Identifying and establishing new sponsors for the organization.
- Communications: Organize, create and curate material for social media, suggest new opportunities for strengthening social media presence. Assist with creating a quarterly external e-newsletter using MailChimp. Provide proofreading assistance for written materials throughout our office. Support miscellaneous writing and editing projects as needed.
Urban Outreach Center

About Us: At the Urban Outreach Center, we share a justice-centered welcome and material necessities to those who need it most, in an inclusive environment that places the needs of the most marginalized over all others.
Intern Roles:
Assist with daily operations of the Urban Outreach Center
- Create and distribute food pantry boxes to homeless outreach guests.
- Help outreach guests in finding clothing for job interviews.
- Manage guest intake procedures and database.
- Help guests with resumes and mock interviews.
Lead our rooftop Urban Garden
- Assist UOC staff in the work of Neighborhood Harvest, our rooftop urban garden, that provides hundreds of pounds of fresh vegetables to our outreach guests each summer.
- Help recruit and manage garden volunteers.
- Help lead guests in gardening workshops.
