2023 Alumni Reunion Distinguished Faculty Member

Maria (Maki) Haberfeld, Ph.D. is the recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Award. She served as a Sergeant in the Israel Defense Forces and a Lieutenant in the Israel National Police. Over an extraordinary 26 years at John Jay College, Dr. Haberfeld has inspired generations of students and alumni, and conducted groundbreaking research in the areas of terrorism, white collar crime and police training, integrity, and leadership. She is Professor and Chair of the Department of Law, Police Science and Criminal Justice Administration, and Academic Director of the NYPD Leadership Certificate Program, which she co-created. She also created the Law Enforcement Leadership Institute for Police Chiefs in NY State as well as an on-line Law Enforcement Leadership Certificate. She has trained and researched police departments nationally and around the world. Dr. Haberfeld has published 24 academic books on policing which have been translated into 3 languages, and over 50 book chapters and journal articles in peer reviewed publications.
