The Sustainability Council develops strategies and actionable steps to incorporate sustainability into the following areas:  energy, water, transportation, procurement, recycling, sustainable nutrition and formal education. In conjunction with administrative and academic programs, the Sustainability Council cultivates a culture of stewardship in which the entire community is aware of, engaged in, and committed to advancing environmental awareness, justice, and sustainable practices.

KEY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be a JJC Student
  • Must maintain a 3.0 GPA
  • Must have good writing and analytical skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Students must perform 96 hours in the field, usually divided evenly across the semester to be 8-10 hours a week
  • This is a non-paid student opportunity for academic credit
  • Applicants are subject to a background investigation

DUTIES:

Under the guidance of the college’s Sustainability Council, the intern will assist with various projects related to Sustainability and Environmental Health and Safety. Such projects may include:

  1. Researching opportunities for making John Jay College more sustainable with respect to food, energy, transportation, incorporating sustainability into the curriculum, and reducing waste.
  2. Planning and implantation of sustainability themed events including but not limited to film festivals, lectures,  fairs,  artistic events,  neighborhood electronic waste disposal fairs. 
  3. Helping to implement the goals and programs of the Sustainability council
  4. Helping to implement environmental health and safety programs.

The Intern will gain an understanding of sustainability issues in the campus environment as well as sustainability and environmental health and safety best practices.  Ability to work independently, follow directions, and complete work as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Submit school transcript(s). Transcripts will be required if you are selected for an internship. You will be required to bring an official copy with you on the first day of your internship. Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a student in a college degree program.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

Environmental Health and Safety will receive all applications to review, conduct interviews and make selections.  Face-to-face interviews are required and interviews will be conducted by the Director of Environmental Health and Safety and members of the Sustainability Council. Grades will also be taken into consideration.
